Our Founding Story

In 1992, the Umthathi Training Project was established in Grahamstown, a vibrant town in the Eastern Cape. This initiative was born out of a pressing need to equip local communities with essential skills for sustainable living. The founders envisioned a future where individuals could harness their potential through comprehensive training programs, fostering both personal and community growth. Over the years, Umthathi has become synonymous with empowerment, offering a wide range of educational opportunities that address the unique challenges faced by the communities we serve.

The Significance of Umthathi

The name ‘Umthathi’ holds profound meaning, derived from the isiXhosa word for sneeze-wood, a tree revered for its resilience and regenerative properties. This symbolism is deeply embedded in our organization’s ethos, representing strength and the continuous cycle of renewal and growth.

Umthathi embodies the spirit of transformation, much like the communities we aim to uplift. Our programs are designed to instill confidence and independence, mirroring the tree’s ability to thrive in diverse conditions.

Through our work, we strive to emulate the sneeze-wood’s enduring legacy, nurturing a foundation of knowledge and skills that empower individuals to lead healthier, more sustainable lives.
